Issa No For 2019 New Year Resolutions

I’m sitting here thinking — does EVERY year call for new resolutions? I would think not.

To be honest, if anything, I feel like I’m in new year’s resolution purgatory! Ok, maybe not quite purgatory [yikes], but, you get me.

Every year, I pretty much set the same goals. And sure, they might be a little remixed but for the most part, they are your typical:

  • I have to get my life together and get healthier because I don’t want to get diabeetus and high blood pressure;
  • I have to lose ~40 lbs, I used to be so in shape!!;
  • I want to get better about my finances, and save for the proverbial rainy day or in case my refrigerator dies like my Dad says; or
  • I want to actively start dating a-gain. Followed by my friend and I toasting over happy hour cocktails agreeing we will try to go on AT LEAST five dates starting in January (as said in years 2015, 2017 and 2018); and finally
  • I want to get serious about my career and doing what I love for a living.

Uh, do I really need to tell you how those have been going so far? Exactly. And just so you know. I’m ZERO for 5 dates – almost three years in a row. So what’s that – 0 for 15?!?!? Depressin’ dawg. Help Me Lord. Fix. It. Jesus. Be. A. Matchmaker. 

Likkeee my dating life is a joookkkkeeeee right now except I ain’t laughin’ mane.  Oh, and I plan to bring you guys on the ride of me getting back out there but you have to promise not to laugh, ok?  Talk about awkward black girl. Shoutout to Issa Rae! Thank you for representing me and all the awkward girls out here tryin’ to learn how to get it.

Anywho, now that we are in December, and 2019 is quickly approaching. I just can’t seem to say the usual, “…next year gon’ be my year ” [Insert aggressive hand claps where appropriate].

In all seriousness, as I thought about what I wanted for my life, and what I envisioned for 2019, that little voice inside  I’ve grown to LOVE softly said, Sis, not this year. Let’s live. It’s going to be what’s it’s going to be; just have some fun. RELAX. No pressure. You will be fine.

Now.

The younger version of myself would freak out since she lived for undue stress.

However, I feel very content and secure going into the new year with my intentions set to just enjoy the moment and have fun. I know I want good health, peace, love, and improved finances so with that understanding, I’ll just be.

And don’t get me wrong. I am not saying setting resolutions are bad or a waste of time. In fact, I firmly believe that you should pretty much always have goals and intentions for yourself. Be purposeful with your life.

I’m just realizing that setting new ones, especially on top of old (and similar) resolutions, are not always needed.

Sometimes, like in my case, revisiting resolutions from last year and revamping them is all you need to do. I updated them to fit my life now, and where I want to go. But I didn’t add one new goal. Not one. And oddly, I feel really good and at ease. Maybe mid way through 2019, I’ll have to add some new ones but I have some current things to mark off my list first in order to move to the next step, and I don’t want to overwhelm myself starting off.

And so, I wanted to write this post as I have been getting asked quite frequently as of late, what my new year’s resolutions are or what new goals I’m setting. And I felt this pressure to have a unique answer. Like oh, I’m going save 50 grand and climb Mount Everest by June.

I’m not.

I kept looking at the abundance of articles out there talking about goals and trends and jump starting your resolutions — trying to find something new, and I just didn’t feel that was necessary. Which people know me well, because it’s such a Bloom thing to try to be prepared and on top of my affairs, however, at this point in my life, being human and owning what I don’t know, is just as important. You’re not going to have all the answers, you’re not going to be ON all the time, you’re not going to have it all figured out all the time, and guess what, You. Don’t. Have. To! That’s how you get anxiety. Feeling like you have to be perfect or have it all together when actually, nobody ever does all the time.

All you have to do is want to be the best version of yourself. Put into daily practice the habits and environment conducive to that evolvment, and monitor as necessary. Now that is key. When you set these goals and resolutions, don’t just set them, and leave them. We are not going to be those start off strong in the gym come January people — then fall off. Make that commitment to check yourself as needed. Create a habit to visit your goals (in your journal preferably 🙂 ) often, to make sure you’re on track to reach said goals. Because if not. December 2019 is going to be a repeat. And one thing I have said as an intention for 2019, is to not waste any more time with my life and what I desire.

Cause again, ain’t nobody got time for that! Amirite?!

Thus, whatever you decide to do – whether you set new resolutions or revamp old ones like me – make sure you and what you envision for your life are at the center of any goal setting. Because every year. Every day, is about making this one life you have be what you want it to be as best you can.
